About Us

Dorchester Habitat was founded in 1993 and has since completed 77 homes in Dorchester County. Each home requires roughly 2,000 volunteer hours and nearly $250,000 to complete. Thanks to dedicated volunteer labor, we keep construction costs minimal while staying on schedule by partnering with trusted subcontractors for specialized work.

Our homes are sold to those who need a decent and affordable place to live. Habitat homeowners undergo a strenuous pre-qualification process and pay a 30-year, interest-free mortgage back to Dorchester Habitat. Mortgage payments include escrows for homeowners insurance and property taxes. Mortgage payments average $1,200 monthly, and future homeowners pay $2,500 in closing costs.

Your Rights as a Donor

Dorchester Habitat for Humanity respects individual donors’ privacy concerns and spends funds according to donor intent. It also discloses essential and relevant information to potential donors.

In raising funds from the public, Dorchester Habitat for Humanity will respect the rights of donors as follows:

  • To be informed of Dorchester Habitat for Humanity’s mission, how resources will be used, and its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
  • To be informed of the identity of those serving on Dorchester Habitat for Humanity’s governing board and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
  • To have access to Dorchester Habitat for Humanity’s most recent financial statements.
  • To be assured that their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they are given.
  • To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.
  • To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and confidentiality to the extent provided by the law.
  • To expect that all relationships with individuals representing Dorchester Habitat for Humanity with the donor will be professional in nature.
  • To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, Dorchester Habitat for Humanity employees, or hired solicitors.
  • To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that Dorchester Habitat for Humanity may intend to share.
  • To ask questions when making a donation and receive prompt, truthful, and forthright answers.
