More than 12 million children – 1 out of every 6– live in poverty in the U.S. The number of homeless children in Dorchester County School District 2 rose 700% from 70 in the 2004-2005 school year to 508 in 2008-2009. About 18.9% of the population in Dorchester County live at or below the poverty level. Poverty is a severe threat to children's health, growth, and potential.
Enabling and joining women throughout Dorchester County as we eliminate poverty housing by nurturing, recruiting, and training women to build simple, decent, and affordable homes.
To involve more women in the construction of homes. As women learn construction skills, they help move children out of poverty housing and positively impact the lives of children by making homeownership a present reality for families in need.
To date, women volunteers have built over 2,000 Habitat homes nationwide and in dozens of other countries. Locally, this is Dorchester Habitat for Humanity’s 4th Women Build home.
